2/30 – The Last Straw (A List Poem)

2/30 – Prompt: Write a list poem (aka catalogue verse) where every line answers the question: What was the last straw?(from Rachel McKibbens WRITING EXERCISE #104)

The last straw was

my best friend sleeping with my girlfriend
the old pipes and cobwebs on mom’s basement ceiling
the photograph of dad I resembled too much
the Xanax that slipped beneath Jim’s passenger seat
the hurt in my bones
the parade that always missed my street
the question I had to ask my brother when the money went missing
the radio silence
the animal in me
the freedom on the other side
the 90 days of wide-eyed terror
the emptiness of a full contact list on broken cell phone
the cheek bones
the church bells
the voting booth
the baseball bat that smashed the trophy case
the tiny golden basketballs strewn everywhere
the prescription pads
the sweatpants with no draw strings
the holy water by the side door
the little kid I left in 89’
the t-shirt he ripped off me while my first girlfriend was on the phone
the people that loved me but couldn’t stop it.
